Dotting up Louis Vuitton window displays everywhere this season is the LV x Kusama Collection. The intriguing 83-year-old artist’s signature motif – polka dots – is seen splashed across the capsule collection of LV handbags, scarves, trench coats, and more. Her iconic pumpkin sculpture manifests in the collection – reincarnated as a purse.
As noted on Artinfo.com – Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs told WWD last May, “It’s really charming. It has the essence of the spirit of her work..” and went on to call the LV monogram and Kusama’s dots “timeless and endless.” The collection is then appropriately entitled Infinitely Kusama.
The artist is the subject of a highly-anticipated retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art has been voluntarily institutionalized since the 70s. As reported in The Daily Beast, “Dots were her thing—beguiling, surreal, mysterious. The dots, she says in her accented English, are ‘my medicine—my personal medicine. From my childhood, I [saw] the polka dots … [and] people talked about [my art with] the polka dots.’”
