THE HOUSE OF GLAM would like to commend Monga (艋舺) on its growing success and in its feat of surpassing the opening gross of even Hollywood productions such as Avatar! Monga (艋舺) (Wanhua is Báng-kah, rendered as “Monga”, in Taiwanese. ), directed by Niu Chen-zer (鈕承澤), opened in Taiwan on 5 February 2010 and grossed NT$8.31 million (US$260,000) in the first day and NT$59.32 million (US$1.85 million) in its first weekend of release, higher than the worldwide hit Avatar that week.
Monga is a 2010 Taiwanese gangster film set in the world of brotherhood and betrayal based on the Wanhua district of 1980s. The movie was shot on location amid such landmarks as Longshan Temple and Huazi Street with nostalgic references to the seedy turbulent past of Taipei’s oldest district.
The movie stars Ethan Ruan(阮經天) and Mark Chao (趙又廷) and also features Ma Ju-Lung (馬如龍) from Cape No.7 and Rhydian Vaughan (鳳小岳) from Winds of September. The film was directed and co-written by Doze Niu (鈕承澤), who also appears in the movie.
Thanks to Wikipedia for the details (…they also have plot summary but we didn’t want to ruin it for everyone)! So as you await the return of GLAM Saturday nights (coming very soon!!) – take a cinematic detour to your local theatre to check out and support Monga!
